The Berlin Homeless Gallery will take place in the very heart of the city, in the Mitte district, in the vicinity of the Berlin synagogue and close to one of the principal streets, Fredrichstraße.
The Homeless will stay in The Art House TACHELES (Kunsthaus Tacheles) at Oranienburger Str. 54-56, situated in the shadow of the synagogue’s domes, glittering with gold.
The building is one of the few relics of the neglected parts of the city, preserved in the state of a half-ruin for forty years during the existance of the freak of history called DDR. However, before this part of old Berlin has been restored in a typical German manner, independent artists rule over it.
Kunsthaus Tacheles is an untypical cultural centre. In the austerely redecorated interiors, they organised galleries, a cinema, a pub and art studios; there is also place for an experimental theatre. Everyone who deals with the plastic arts may send an application and the description of the project they would like to realize. If their idea is accepted by the art board, they will be able to use one of the TACHELES studios for a given time, not paying the rent but merely being charged for the technical expenses.
TACHELES was created at the beginning of the 20th century as a luxurious department store, being then a part of the Friedrichstadtpassagen. It used to be one of the last trade buildings which appeared in Europe before WWI. The construction was carried out under the inspection of the emperor’s building inspector Franz Ahrens.
In 1928 the place changed its function. After being taken over by AEG, the name turned into Haus der Technik. The function was also new, from then on there was an exhibition and presentation centre of the concern.
After the nazis had taken over Germany, TACHELES was used by various organisations connected with them, including Deutsche Arbeiterfront. During the war, there was a gun factory in some of the rooms. Due to that, the building was partly damaged during the allies raid in 1943.
After the fall of the Hitler Germany and the creation of DDR, TACHELES was not restored to its original shape; for a long time the damaged part remained in the state of a ruin, while the wing of the building at Oraniennburger Str. hosted the Camera cinema and various cultural institutions.
After uniting of Germany, the building was established a conservation area and while waiting for the revitalisation of the adjoining quarter, it hosted an organisation of independent creators, Kunsthaus Tacheles.
